1. Russia unveils world's first floating nuclear power station
Russia has unveiled the world's first floating nuclear power station in the port of the city of Murmansk, where it will be loaded with nuclear fuel before heading to eastern Siberia.
  • Constructed by the state nuclear power firm Rosatom, the 144 by 30 metre holds two reactors with two 35 megawatt nuclear reactors that are similar to those used to power icebreaker ships.
  • It will be primarily used to power oil rigs as Russia pushes further north into the Arctic to drill for oil and gas and needs electricity in far-flung locations.
2. NABARD sanctions Solar street lighting system in Arunachal
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned LED Solar Street Lighting system for Arunachal Pradesh under its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund with a total grant of Rs 87.83 lakh.
  • The project would be implemented in the four districts of the state Tirap, Longding, Namsai and Tawang.
  • Chief Minister Pema Khandu launched the scheme in presence of NABARD Chairman Harsh Kumar Bhanwala.
3. Railways to use AI to control air circulation in Manipur tunnel
For the first time, the railways will use artifical intelligence to control air circulation, signages and even supervision and maintenance work in the 10.28 km-long tunnel in Imphal as part of its 110 km railway line from Jiribam to Manipur's capital city.
  • While the national transporter is already using this technique to detect flaws or problems in the signalling system, this is the first time that such a technology will be used in a tunnel in the country.
  • The system will control air circulation in the system, along with other aspects.
  • It will alert the passenger in case of fire and help us in quick evacuation in case of any issue.
4. Gujarat Governor to hold additional charge of MP
Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli was given the additional charge of Madhya Pradesh as the incumbent Governor, Anandiben Patel is on leave.
  • This was informed by the Rashtrapati Bhavan through a communique.
  • Anandiben, became the Governor of Madhya Pradesh in January 2018, replacing Kohli, who even at that time held the same position.
5. Rajinder Singh named Hockey India president
Rajinder Singh was named president of Hockey India (HI), following Mariamma Koshy's resignation from the post.
  • Singh, who is the Senior Vice President of Hockey India, has take charge as President.
  • He was earlier the Treasurer of HI and currently serves as the Treasurer of Hockey Jammu & Kashmir.
6. West Bengal Government to honour Asha Bhosle
Veteran singer Asha Bhosle will be honoured by the West Bengal government on May 21.
  • Asha Bhosle has been a part of the Hindi film industry for over six decades and has sung numerous songs.
  • Asha thanked West Bengal Government for bestowing their highest civilian award on her.
7. NMDC bags S&P Platts Global Metals Award in CSR category
Iron ore mining major NMDC Ltd has bagged the S&P Global Platts Global Metals Award 2018 in the corporate social responsibility category.
  • At an event held at London Grosvenor Square Marriott Hotel in the UK, N. Baijendra Kumar, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, and Sandeep Tula, Director (Personnel), NMDC Ltd, received the coveted award.
  • The 12 shortlisted nominations were of renowned companies from across the world. This is the first time since inception of the awards that an Indian company has bagged an award in this category.
8. S Korea beat India to win Asian Champions Trophy
South Korea pipped India 1-0 to win the fifth Women’s Asian Champions Trophy at the Sunrise Stadium in Donghae city.
  • South Korea, thus, won the title for the third time after 2010 and 2011.
  • India finished runners-up for the second time after having lost in the final to Japan in 2013.
9. Nadal edges Zverev to win Italian Open
Rafa Nadal come from behind in the deciding set and beat defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-1 1-6 6-3 in the Italian Open final.
  • The win gave the Spaniard his 56th title on clay and he will reclaim the world number one ranking from Roger Federer.
